Abstract
Crime has been a symptomatic issue that civilized world had suffered from.To tackle crime does not come through enhancing security and police procedures, but through studying relevant factors and aspects from different and various fields of knowledge. One of such fields is architectural and urban design strategies and in specificthe role of the designer and / or the planner in providing secure living spaces.Territoriality represents one of the most important element in creatingdefensible space in urban design to reduce crime rate. Literature review showed a biggap in thescientific awareness about the concept of this phenomenon, and its relations to architectural design, particularly to urban design strategies. The world wide literature had discussed several concepts but were not comprehensive, some of them were connected with human behavioral aspects, others were connected with the relation of man with space. These concepts as a whole, had neglected an important aspect in this subject, the aspect that deals with the nature of relationship of Territoriality with crime rate, which is considered as an interrelated relationship. The research had reached to four models of crime prevention, and has adequately contributed to the objective knowledge of this complex field.
